Twilight Struggle: Red Sea – Strategic Confrontation in the Horn of Africa (1974)
Twilight Struggle: Red Sea – Conflict in the Horn of Africa is a strategy board game for 1-2 players that conveys the tension of the Cold War in the Horn of Africa in 1974. The overthrow of Emperor Haile Selassie I by Marxist officers in Ethiopia caused geopolitical upheavals, turning the region into a field of confrontation between the USA and the Soviet Union.
As a standalone game based on the award-winning Twilight Struggle, Red Sea offers a condensed experience lasting about 35 minutes, ideal for new players. It retains the strategic tension of the original, focusing on 12 countries of East Africa and the Middle East, such as Ethiopia, Somalia, Kenya and Egypt. The addition of the area “Strategic Sea Lanes” enhances complexity, requiring control for additional victory points.
Players use cards to place influence, conduct coups, or trigger historical events, such as the Ogaden War. The game includes 51 new cards, 88 counters and an attractive map. Additionally, the cards are compatible with the base Twilight Struggle, allowing combinations for more extended matches.
The game is part of GMT Games' “Lunchtime Games” series, offering quick but deep gameplay. With a theme that combines historical accuracy and strategic challenge, it is an ideal choice for those who want to explore Cold War diplomacy on a smaller scale.
