Flashpoint South China Sea is a two-player strategy game that simulates the complex geopolitical dispute currently taking place between the United States and China in a contested area of the South China Sea. The game is based on a deck of cards that captures developments from today's newspaper headlines, enhanced by cards interpreting recent history, as well as a set of speculative cards that depict a wide range of possible future events.
The Chinese player seeks to influence other countries in the region, to consolidate territorial claims and regional hegemony, and to improve its global standing. The US player seeks to maintain its influence over the region's allied countries, to secure freedom of navigation, and to contain China. The success of both players depends on the support and submission of the region's non-player countries. The game does not deal with a possible full-scale military conflict. Instead, it requires the differentiated exercise of political, economic and military resources, in a form that at first glance is diplomacy – at sea, in the air and ultimately in the minds of people – to achieve victory.
