The Fire in the Lake: Insurgency in Vietnam of GMT Games is a deep historical strategy board game for the Vietnam War and Volume IV of the popular COIN Series. Designed by Mark Herman and Volko Ruhnke, it transports 1–4 players into the complex military and political conflict for South Vietnam.
In the Fire in the Lake board game, players take on four different factions: United States (US), ARVN, North Vietnamese Army (NVA), and Viet Cong (VC). Each faction has different capabilities, strategic objectives, and victory conditions, creating an extremely asymmetric Vietnam War board game with intense interaction.
The card-assisted COIN system combines military operations, counterinsurgency, political influence, and economic factors. Players face issues such as the infiltration of communist forces, the Ho Chi Minh Trail, operations in the South, American air power, the politics of Saigon, and the information war. Historical events such as the Tet Offensive, Vietnamization, Easter Offensive, and Linebacker II can drastically change the course of a game.
The Area Majority / Influence, Variable Phase Order, Variable Player Powers, Dice Rolling, and Card-Driven Events mechanisms create a demanding historical wargame where military power and political control are interconnected. Solo play is also supported, with a system for managing factions not controlled by players.
