Napoleon 1870 – Historical Wargame
The Napoléon 1870 is a historical Franco-Prussian War board game for two players, depicting the dramatic campaign of 1870 between France of Napoléon III and Prussia of Bismarck. It is the fourth game in the recognized Napoléon series by Shakos, following Napoléon 1806, Napoléon 1807, and Napoléon 1815, bringing the proven campaign system into a new historical conflict.
In the Napoléon 1870 board game, the two players take on opposing strategic roles. As Napoléon III, you must escape the trap set by your opponent and prevent the encirclement of the French forces at Metz. As Bismarck, your goal is to surprise the French forces, outmaneuver them, and tighten the noose around them.
The game uses wooden blocks, point-to-point movement, card-driven battles, events, dice rolling, and variable setup. The hidden information of the blocks creates fog of war, allowing for bluffs and deception, while the different capabilities of the two sides enhance the asymmetric nature of the confrontation.
The Napoléon 1870 wargame includes different scenarios, from the early battles at the borders to the final confrontation at Metz. Depending on the scenario, a game can last from about 40 minutes to 2.5 hours, allowing for both short historical confrontations and larger campaigns.
Designed by Fred Serval and Brian Asklev, the game combines historical simulation with accessible rules and intense strategic decisions.
For fans of historical wargames, block wargames, military strategy board games, and the Napoléon series, the Franco-Prussian War board game by Shakos offers the opportunity to rewrite the history of 1870.
