Thirty Years of Misery – Thirty Years’ War Wargame
The Thirty Years of Misery is a historical Thirty Years’ War board game by VUCA Simulations, designed by Brian Asklev, that depicts the devastating Thirty Years' War of 1618–1648. For 2–4 players, the game combines military campaigns, politics, religious influence, and cooperation among allies in an accessible yet strategy-filled historical wargame.
In the Thirty Years of Misery board game, players control the major powers that shaped the conflict: Imperial Habsburgs, Catholic League, Sweden, and France. The two factions must cooperate to prevail in the war, but there is a critical twist: even within the winning alliance, only one faction can ultimately win the game. Cooperation is therefore essential, but personal interests never disappear.
The gameplay uses card-driven mechanics, events, random activation order through chit-pull, and custom dice for resolving battles. The result is a dynamic historical narrative with uncertainty, twists, and different outcomes in each game. Religion also plays a key role in the system: players are not only fighting for military control but also for the dominance of Catholics or Protestants in the German principalities.
The Thirty Years of Misery wargame typically concludes after the tenth round, but it can end earlier through the Treaty of Westphalia cards or a large difference in Victory Points.
For fans of historical board games, card-driven wargames, military strategy games, and European history games, the Thirty Years’ War board game by VUCA offers a unique blend of cooperation, competition, and historical strategy.
Win the war alongside your ally — but make sure the final victory belongs to you.
