Holland ’44 (2nd Edition)
Holland ’44, Operation Market-Garden, September 1944 is a two-player game that depicts the combined attack of the Allies on the ground and the airborne attack in the Netherlands during World War ’II, which had the codename Operation Market-Garden.
The game begins with the airborne landings on 17 September and continues until 23 September. The Allied player must advance his ground forces as quickly as possible to relieve his besieged airborne divisions and seize a bridge over the Rhine.
The map scale is 2 kilometers per hex and covers the battlefield from the Belgian border to Arnhem. The map also includes the area where the British 8th Corps fought on the right flank of the 30th Corps.
Most units in Holland ’44 are battalions, but units range from companies to brigades.
Holland ’44 uses a system very similar to Ardennes ’44: The Battle of the Bulge. It is basically a simple move-combat game, I-go and then u-go. If you have played Ardennes ’44: The Battle of the Bulge or Normandy ’44 you will not have difficulty learning the game. Rules such as ZOC Bonds, Determined Defense, Extended Movement and Traffic Markers make their reappearance. Because of the terrain of the Netherlands, special attention has been given to river crossings, bridge construction and battles on the flat polder ground.
The 2nd Edition includes many changes to the counters, which improve the units' battle layout (Order of Battle), as well as some modifications to the rules, so that it fits more closely with the other games in the 19xx series.”
