Storms of Steel covers one of the largest tank battles in history. German armor and anti-tank weapons had caught up with the Soviets. This allowed the Germans to destroy most Soviet tanks from long range. However, the Soviets countered this advantage with mass tank production, throwing them at the Germans in an attempt to overwhelm them.
The rules for Storms of Steel are the same as for Awakening the Bear, but the games play very differently. In Awakening the Bear, the Germans had to flank and close in on the Soviet tanks—if they even had a chance of penetrating the heavy armor of the T-34s. But in 1943, at the Battle of Kursk, most Soviet armored vehicles could penetrate German tanks from long range. The situation was reversed, and players must apply very different tactics.
Storms of Steel also uses map overlays, produced in the same high-quality format as the maps themselves. These overlays allow players to enrich every firefight they play!
