The Great Hunger – Ireland’s Tragedy in the 19th Century
The Great Hunger Board Game is a unique historical board game of strategy from Compass Games, designed by Kevin McPartland and Jerry Shiles. The game represents one of the most significant humanitarian crises of the 19th century, the Great Famine of Ireland, offering an experience that combines historical accuracy, strategic decisions, and a strong thematic character.
In The Great Hunger, players take on the role of families of Irish tenant farmers and land workers in the early 19th century. At the beginning of the game, potato cultivation leads to population growth and economic development. However, when the devastating potato disease appears in 1845, players are called to manage the consequences of hunger, disease, migration, and social changes.
The game uses a clever system of double-sided cards. In the first phase, events that enhance population growth are activated, while after the onset of the disaster, the same cards change function, representing the search for help, finding work, migration on the so-called “Coffin Ships” to America, or the spread of diseases.
Players“ decisions are influenced by historical events, the British economic policy of the time, limited government aid, and survival difficulties. The winner is the player who manages to maintain the largest population when the ”Blight Abates” card appears, marking the end of the great crisis.
The Great Hunger is an ideal choice for those who love historical board games, strategy games, card-driven games, historical simulation games, and tabletop games with a strong educational and historical character.
