Empire of the Sun: The Pacific War 1941–1945 – 5th Printing

The Empire of the Sun: The Pacific War 1941–1945 – 5th Printing is a historical Pacific War strategy board game from GMT Games, designed by Mark Herman. It is a card-driven wargame of strategic level that covers the entire war in the Pacific, from the attack on Pearl Harbor to the surrender of Japan.

In the Empire of the Sun board game, players take control of Japanese and Allied forces, directing operations across a vast area stretching from India to Hawaii and from Alaska to Australia. MacArthur, Yamamoto, Nimitz, and Mountbatten are part of a conflict where every strategic decision can change the course of the war.

The game combines the Card Driven Game (CDG) system with elements of classic hex-based wargame. Strategy Cards are used to activate forces and conduct operations, while players must effectively coordinate land, air, and naval forces. Battles are divided into air-naval and ground combat, creating a deep World War II strategy tabletop experience.

The political will of the USA is also a critical factor. Japan may seek a negotiated peace, while the Allies must overturn the initial Japanese expansion and move towards final victory.

The 5th Printing adds the Burma Scenario, first introduced in C3i #35, along with a separate Burma map 11″×17″, an updated rulebook, and corrections of known errata. The remaining components remain essentially the same as the previous printing.

The game is particularly aimed at fans of historical wargames, card-driven games, and players seeking a deep World War II strategy tabletop experience with great historical and strategic detail.
