The Silence of the Lambs is a 1991 thriller film directed by Jonathan Demme, starring Jodie Foster and Anthony Hopkins in the leading roles. The film screenplay is based on the novel of the same name by Thomas Harris. The film won five Academy Awards.
The young FBI trainee agent Clarice Starling (Jodie Foster) will visit the long-incarcerated genius cannibal psychiatrist Hannibal Lecter (Anthony Hopkins) in order to extract information from him about a serial killer (Ted Levine), who has kidnapped the daughter (Brooke Smith) of a senator. However, to get the information she wants, she will have to open the gates of her soul to him and tell him about the worst memory from her childhood.
The main character, Buffalo Bill, played successfully by Ted Levine, is inspired by three notorious killers who terrorized American society. Harris borrowed traits from Ed Gein, who was a necrophile and skinned his victims, Ted Bundy, who raped and then killed his female victims, and Gary Heidnik, who kidnapped, raped, brutally tortured, and imprisoned young girls for months in the basement of his house.
Anthony Hopkins received rave reviews for his role as Hannibal Lecter, despite appearing in the film for only 16 minutes. His performance won the Academy Award for Best Actor and remains the shortest lead role in Oscar history to win the award. The film received very good reviews. Besides Anthony Hopkins, Jodie Foster and Ted Levine received very positive comments for their performances.
