The sorceress Yennefer of Vengerberg (nicknamed Yen or Yenna) first appeared in the short story collection “The Last Wish” (The Last Wish), where she appears both in the short story “The Last Wish” and in the short story “The Voice of Reason” (The Voice of Reason). She later appeared in many other Witcher stories and is one of the main characters of the Witcher saga.

Yennefer is described as possessive. She becomes one of Geralt's lovers, although their relationship is difficult and full of drama. Both Geralt and Yennefer are sterile, which adds another level of tragedy to the mix. Yennefer struggles to accept this fact and tries various methods to restore her fertility. Yennefer ends up becoming Ciri's mother, while she teaches and cares for her while she was in Ellander.

Yennefer was born on Beltane in the year 1173. She lived in the capital of Aedirn, Vengerberg. She is one of the most powerful mages on the continent and only a few surpass her. She is the youngest member of the Council of Mages and later became a member of the Stoa of Mages. During the battle of Sodden Hill she was blinded by Fringilla Vigo, a Nilfgaardian sorceress. Her vision was magically restored.

Yennefer was famous for her beauty, although during the events of the Tower of the Swallow she was 94 years old. She always dressed in black and white clothes. She used perfumes of lilac and gooseberry. She had violet eyes and raven-black hair. Before becoming a sorceress, she was hunchbacked, but her deformities were corrected by Tissaia de Vries while she was an apprentice, although Geralt is able to see the subtle signs that let him understand the truth.

At the end of the books, Yennefer ends up dying (implied, not confirmed) while trying to heal Geralt, having lost all her energy. In the TV series, Yennefer is portrayed by Anya Chalotra.
