By Swords and Bayonets – Tactical Civil War Game
By Swords and Bayonets is the ninth game in GMT Games' award-winning Great Battles of the American Civil War (GBACW) series, designed by Allen Dickerson. It serves as an ideal introduction for new players to the world of tactical war games, offering four small but intense battles of the American Civil War.
Each scenario takes place on a 22″ x 17″ map, with forces not exceeding one division per side and fewer than 50 combat units. This allows players to focus on strategy and tactics without being overwhelmed by complex mechanics.
The four battles included are:
- Big Bethel (10 June 1861): General Butler's attack against Magruder's forces.
- Rappahannock Station (7 November 1863): The attempt by Sedgewick's VI Corps to isolate and break Early's forces. Includes a short tutorial scenario.
- New Bern (14 March 1862): General Burnside's attack on the fortified but inexperienced Southern forces.
- Mill Springs (19 January 1862): General Crittenden's attempt to surprise the Union forces before they were reinforced.
The game fully supports the rules of the GBACW series, allowing players to easily transition to larger battles of the series in the future.
