Ivan Vasilievich Drago is a fictional character from the Rocky film series. He first appears in the 1985 film Rocky IV, in which he is the main antagonist and Rocky Balboa's opponent and is also responsible for the death of Apollo Creed, having brutally defeated him in their fight. He also appears in the 2018 film Creed II, in which he is the main antagonist and serves as the trainer of his son Viktor, who is played by a real Romanian kickboxer. In both films he is portrayed by Swedish-American actor and real-life martial artist Dolph Lundgren. A poll of former heavyweight champions and distinguished boxing writers ranked Drago as the third best fighter in the Rocky film series.
Ivan Drago is a gold Olympian and boxing champion from the Soviet Union, who had an amateur record of 100-0-0 wins (100 KOs). Drago is carefully adjusted and trained to be the perfect fighter. His heart rate and punching power are continuously measured by computers during his training. Drago appears to receive intramuscular injections in the film, which are implied to be anabolic steroids, although the true nature of the injectable solution is never stated explicitly - instead, Ludmilla, his wife, jokingly says that Drago is like Popeye and eats spinach every day.
Ivan Drago was forced to leave Russia to care for his son Viktor Drago after his defeat by Rocky. He was married to another athlete, Ludmilla Vobet (Brigitte Nielsen), who is referred to as a double Olympic gold medalist in swimming. She is far more articulate than Drago, who rarely speaks, and always speaks for him at press conferences and interviews. In Creed II, it is revealed that Drago and Ludmilla divorced as a result of his defeat by Rocky Balboa and he now raises their son alone – the same professional boxer -.
