Minix Figure FC Barcelona Pique 12cm
Gerard Piqué Bernabeu (born 2 February 1987) is a Spanish former professional footballer who played as a central defender. He is considered one of the best defenders of his generation.
Originally a talented student-athlete at La Masia, Piqué began his professional career with Manchester United in 2004. He returned to Barcelona in 2008 under the leadership of Pep Guardiola and helped the club win the treble in 2008-09 and 2014-15. He is one of only four players to have won the Champions League in two consecutive years with different clubs, the others being Marcel Desailly, Paulo Sousa and Samuel Eto'o.
Piqué also represented Spain 102 times, making his debut on 11 February 2009. He played an integral role in the Spanish teams that won the 2010 FIFA World Cup and UEFA Euro 2012. He retired from the national team after the 2018 FIFA World Cup.
Piqué was a modern and imposing defender, combining strength and tackling ability with good technique and passing. Due to his height and physical attributes, he was strong in the air. Although mainly used as a central defender, he was a tactically versatile player capable of playing as a defensive midfielder, a position in which he was originally developed in his youth. He also developed as a sweeper at times, showing similarities to the German legend Franz Beckenbauer, thus earning the sobriquet “Piquénbauer”.
Occasionally he was also known to use his height as an additional attacking threat by moving into more advanced positions, often operating as a supporting striker, particularly if his team was behind late in matches. His ability on the ball and his game-reading allowed him to form an effective central-defensive partnership with the more physical Carles Puyol, both at Barcelona and with Spain.
Despite his talent in his youth, he was initially accused by some experts of being prone to defensive errors, and has been criticized at times for his inconsistency and lack of rhythm. He is regarded as one of the best defenders in world football by experts; in 2018, Piqué's former defensive partner Puyol described him as "the best central defender in the world" due to his personal development as a player. intelligence, leadership, sense of position, composure and anticipation.
