Hanami – Strategy Board Game by Reiner Knizia
Hanami is an elegant strategy board game by the legendary designer Reiner Knizia, based on the classic Samurai from 1998 and redesigned with a new theme, new strategic options, and two different ways to play. In the board game Hanami, players travel imaginatively through springtime Japan, among blooming sakura, parks of Tokyo, picnic blankets, and traditional paper lanterns.
The goal is to secure the best spots for your group and dominate the different activities of Hanami. Each tile represents a picnic blanket and indicates both your team's strength and its preferred activity: sakura viewing, onigiri, or an evening out under the lanterns.
Players strategically place the tiles around the Activity Tokens. When a token is surrounded, the player with the highest relative strength can claim it. In the end, the majority of the corresponding Activity Tokens yields Victory Tokens, which determine the winner.
Hanami: Samurai Reimagined offers two different setups. The Japan/Nihon map retains the classic ruleset of Samurai, while the Tokyo map introduces new challenges, abilities, and player tiles, offering different strategic possibilities.
The mechanisms of Tile Placement, Area Majority / Influence, Hexagon Grid, and Set Collection create a game with simple rules but significant decisions around positioning, timing, and area control.
With a duration of 30–60 minutes and 2–4 players, Hanami combines abstract strategy with a particularly beautiful theme inspired by the Japanese tradition of cherry blossom viewing.
