Year of the Rat Deluxe Edition – Wargame Vietnam
The Year of the Rat Deluxe Edition from Decision Games is a tabletop war game that depicts the Easter Offensive of 1972 in Vietnam. The campaign began on March 30, when the North Vietnamese Army launched an attack on South Vietnam. On the table, the confrontation turns into an asymmetric conflict, where speed, resupply, and air support affect your choices.
The NVA divisions cooperate with Viet Cong regiments and deception units, aiming for strikes on cities and bases. Opposing them, the forces of South Vietnam, ARVN, respond with paratroopers, commandos, and marines. The increasing American air strikes and the supply difficulties of the NVA create different pressures for each side.
The Deluxe Edition updates the original game from SPI, incorporating later historical research, updated force composition, and revised terrain analysis. The new graphics on the larger maps and unit tiles accompany an expanded simulation of the campaign. The original design by John Prados returns in a version designed by Joseph Miranda.
The game includes three scenarios and fifteen variations of force composition, offering different possibilities for historical exploration. The options cover operations in Laos and Cambodia. Extensive optional rules allow you to examine additional aspects of the conflict, while expanded air-mobile operations and tank regiments add new operational parameters.
The available force composition includes American units from the period 1971–1972, as well as Australian, Thai, Cambodian forces, and Khmer Rouge. Riverine units, ARVN bases, and regional forces enrich the military context. The battles of large formations and the sieges invite you to combine offensive moves with situational assessment.
If you are looking for a wargame for the Vietnam War, with asymmetric forces, historical scenarios, and different troop deployment options, discover the Year of the Rat Deluxe Edition at Meeple Planet. Study the campaign, test alternative decisions, and explore the challenges of Vietnam 1972.
