Each game features a unique battlefield, with conditions that affect your decisions and the deployment of your forces.
The Deluxe Edition retains the core of the original games and upgrades their presentation. It includes two sturdy double-sided boards, updated map and unit graphics, larger unit tiles sized 9/16 inch, a color rulebook, and new aid cards. Thus, the classic experience of historical strategy gains a refreshed presence.
The four wargames share a common system of core rules, based on Borodino–Napoleon at Waterloo. Each battle adds special rules, historical setup, reinforcements, and designer notes. By learning the core mechanism, you can transition from one confrontation to another, examining how the terrain and specific conditions change tactical choices.
Movement occurs sequentially on a hexagonal map, while control zones limit maneuvering freedom. Combat between adjacent opposing units is mandatory, and each hex allows one unit. The concentration of power, positioning, and utilization of terrain become crucial. Outcomes are resolved through a battle table, with the ratio of forces affecting the chances of success.
The scale ranges from 400 to 800 meters per hex, with each turn corresponding to one to two hours of real time. The scenarios offer different extents of confrontation, from the first day of Leipzig to the extensive Grand Battle of twenty turns.
