Seljuk Byzantium Besieged – Historical Wargame Levy & Campaign
Seljuk: Byzantium Besieged 1068–1071 is an epic strategic board wargame that belongs to the famous Levy & Campaign series by Volko Ruhnke. Players are transported to 11th-century Anatolia, the era when Romanos Diogenes assumed the throne of the Eastern Roman Empire, while the relentless Seljuk Turks under Sultan Alp Arslan raid Roman territories and threaten the very existence of the empire.
In Seljuk, players take on the role of either the Eastern Romans or the Seljuk Turks. The Romans field heavily armored regiments of cavalry and infantry, but few and valuable Theme troops, which they must use carefully to defend fortified walls and cities from raids and sieges. On the other hand, the Seljuks rely on mobile cavalry units, lightly armed horsemen with composite bows, and alliances with local principalities and nomadic steppe tribes, launching swift raids and widespread devastation.
The game focuses on logistical support, resource management and tactical maneuver, delivering historical accuracy to the conflict that culminated at the Battle of Manzikert. Asymmetric victory conditions create a dynamic 'cat-and-mouse' confrontation, where the Romans must withstand the raids and preserve imperial dominance, while the Seljuks seek to conquer Anatolia and capture the emperor himself.
Seljuk: Byzantium Besieged 1068–1071 offers deep historical theme, asymmetric gameplay and an intense atmosphere of medieval warfare. Ideal for fans of wargames, historical simulations and strategy, it offers a unique experience of army management, diplomacy and battle.
