Rostov 41 Race to the Don (Reprint)
Rostov ’41: Race to the Don is the 21st game of the Standard Combat Series (SCS). It covers the bold - some would call it 'rash' - attempt by Army Group South to capture Rostov in late autumn 1941. Surprisingly, the attack succeeded, resulting, however, in the Germans becoming isolated at the end of a logistical arm. The reconstituting Red Army, which had been wounded by a long series of defeats, saw this as the perfect opportunity to unleash the first coordinated offensive of the war, thereby opening the way for the Moscow counteroffensive a few weeks later.
Rostov ’41 covers all of this mobile action in turns representing 3 to 6 days and at a map scale of 2.5 miles per hex. Units range from battalions to divisions. The low opponent density and the wide open map bring all the action and possibilities to light in a wild game.
Both players will find themselves under fire.
The German player must use his limited and overextended forces to carry out a brilliant coup. Playing it safe is not enough- speed is everything. With a lot of skill and a little luck, Rostov will be yours. Then you will have to pay the price.
The Russian player must preserve his forces, as the German sword expends its energy. While the capture of Rostov requires a lot of skill and a little luck on the German side, don't start believing that your job is easy. The derailment of this German movement can easily consume precious forces needed for your main effort: to turn the tables on the Germans and to take back large areas of the homeland.
