Tzolk’in: The Mayan Calendar introduces a new game mechanism: dynamic worker placement. Players representing different Mayan tribes place their workers on giant interconnected gears, and as the gears rotate, they move the workers to different action spaces.
During a turn in Tzolk’in: The Mayan Calendar, players may either (a) place one or more workers on the lowest visible space of the gears or (b) retrieve one or more workers. When placing workers, they must pay corn, which is used as currency in the game. When retrieving a worker, they perform actions depending on that worker’s position. Actions found “later” on the gears are more valuable, so it is wise to let time work for you. But players cannot skip their turn—if all of their workers are on the gears, they must pick some up.
The game ends after one full rotation of the central Tzolkin gear. There are many paths to victory. Pleasing the gods by placing crystal skulls in deep caves or building many temples are only two of those many paths…
