Tinners’ Trail: Strategic Mining and Investment Board Game for 1-5 Players
Tinners’ Trail is a strategy board game that transports players to 19th-century Cornwall, the era of the tin and copper mining boom. Designed by Martin Wallace and reissued in 2021 by Alley Cat Games, the game combines economic management, auctions, and tactical resource use in a rich thematic setting.
Players take on the role of entrepreneurs investing in mines, buying areas through auctions and exploring them for valuable metals. Mining requires careful management of the “work points” and financial resources, as the presence of water increases costs. Installing infrastructure such as ports, train stations and drainage tunnels can reduce expenses, but the available upgrades are limited.
One of the most important strategic choices is investing profits in industries outside Cornwall, converting money into victory points. The earlier the investment is made, the greater the return, adding an element of timing and risk.
The 2021 edition brings significant upgrades compared to the original 2008 release:
- Support for 1 to 5 players, with a new solo system “Lord Wallace”.
- Replacing the dice with tiles for resource placement, reducing randomness.
- Introduction of dual-purpose cards that provide information before auctions or bonuses afterwards.
Tinners’ Trail is ideal for players who enjoy deep strategic games with a historical background and dynamic economic management. Its thematic approach and mechanics make it an excellent choice for those seeking a rich gaming experience.
