Spain, 1936: General Franco and his troops sweep across the lands of Spain, giving way to a long period of civil war and repression. After the Spanish Civil War, a group loyal to the Republic continued the armed struggle, forming resistance groups, more broadly known as “Maquis”. Hidden in the mountains, these men and women risked their lives to defend the ideals of democracy and freedom.

Opposing them were Franco's army, the Civil Guard and the Armed Police, but the Maquis perfected their guerrilla warfare in France during the Β’ World War and were determined to take back their homeland. In the mind of every Maquis echoed the longing of many of their compatriots: Resist!

Resist! is a fast card game in which you take on the role of the Spanish Maquis, who fight against the Francoist regime. During a series of rounds, you take on increasingly difficult missions and by completing the missions you earn the points required for victory. If you fail to beat the missions and the enemies, you may lose. At the end of each round, you must choose whether to end the resistance or risk it and take on one more mission.

At the start of the game, you assemble a band of twelve Maquis, who are represented by a deck of cards. At the heart of the game is the tension between keeping your Maquis hidden from Franco or revealing them to unlock their full potential. Unfortunately, Maquis who are revealed are removed from your deck and you most likely won’t be able to use them for the rest of the game. Although Resist! has some small deck-building elements, it is mainly a “deck-destruction” game in which you must manage your deck, balancing the decision to beat the immediate threat with the effort to advance to the next mission.
