It is 13th-century Italy. Trade flourishes between the city-states and the Levant. Venice, Florence and Genoa overflow with wealth. However, each city-state is also plagued by a weak national army, leaving them defenseless against the invasion of their envious neighbors.
As veteran English soldiers returned from the Crusades, Italy found itself facing an influx of desperate and able men. These hired blades undertook to fight for individual city-states under an agreement known as condotta. The most elite of these men were the mercenary leaders, known as Condottiere.
The aim of Condottiere is to acquire four connected provinces in Renaissance Italy. To achieve this, players auction off various provinces on the board and bid on those provinces with a hand of cards representing mercenaries, seasons, scarecrows and political personalities. However, unlike typical auctions in which only the highest bidder loses his bid, in Condottiere every player loses his bid. Players, in fact, bid the number of troops they are willing to lose to win a province. However, several special-effect cards upset the contests and keep players guessing.
