Empire of the Sun (4th Printing) is a strategic-level look at the entire war in the Pacific. From the attack on Pearl Harbor to the surrender of Japan. EotS is the first card-driven game (CDG) that brings the system closer to a classic hex-and-counter wargame. Yet it still retains all the tension and uncertainty people expect from a CDG.

You take on the role of MacArthur, Yamamoto, Nimitz, and Mountbatten as you direct your forces across the breadth of the planet. From India to Hawaii and from Alaska to Australia. This is represented on a single map based on a 1942 equal-area projection for the entire theater of operations.

As in other games using the CDG system, players try to maximize the impact of their cards. Even while hiding their intentions and traps from their opponent. The player is confronted with a broad set of clear strategic choices. EotS focuses on directing the major offensive axes of advance. The Japanese early in the game are called upon to achieve their historical expansion. Meanwhile the Allied forces fight against time to react with the forces they have in place, trying to inflict maximum damage on the hard-to-replace Japanese veteran units.

The battle in EotS is based on the successful use of superior combined land, air, and sea forces in a two-tier battle system. The first tier is the resolution of the aeronaval battle, while the second tier covers the land battle. The culmination of both tiers results in one side prevailing in the battle.
