Sheldon Lee Cooper is a theoretical physicist at Caltech. Alongside his best friend Leonard Hofstadter, he is the main protagonist of The Big Bang Theory and the title character of Young Sheldon.
Originally from East Texas, Sheldon started college at the age of 11 in 1991, receiving his first doctorate at the age of 16. As a child, Sheldon took part in many “child prodigy” experiments, such as his plan to provide free electricity to his hometown by building a nuclear reactor – a plan that government bureaucrats shut down, claiming it is illegal to store uranium from yellow silica in a garden shed.
A proud nerd, he has no qualms about speaking Klingon, wearing vintage superhero-logo T-shirts, or spouting various historical and cultural anecdotes (e.g. his account of the introduction of the fork in Thailand). Although he may claim to be the perfect human specimen, Sheldon has his flaws. Sheldon is marked by a strict adherence to routine and hygiene, an overly intellectual personality, a weak understanding of irony, sarcasm, and humor, and a general lack of humility or empathy, the first of which is evidenced by the fact that he has no problem expressing to his peers his admiration for his superior intelligence. These qualities, along with his tendency toward pranks, are the main source of the character's humor. He is often considered the series' most iconic character. Sheldon has developed a more social personality due to the influence of his friends, especially his girlfriend Penny and his wife Amy.
