In the films, the T-1000 was created by the series' main antagonist, Skynet, a rogue self-aware artificial intelligence that directs its robotic creations against the human resistance in an all-out war. The T-1000 is described in Terminator 2 (T2) as consisting of liquid metal, or a mimetic polyalloy (nanorobot) that can manipulate itself to take various forms. Aside from being able to camouflage itself by taking the appearance of indeterminate objects or to take the form of any human it will eliminate in pursuit of its objectives, the T-1000's shape-shifting abilities allow it to form its limbs, hands, hands and fingers into lethal weapons, such as sharp blades and hard hammer blows. It can also slip through narrow physical openings by transforming into its fully liquid form, and reform from almost any physical damage. It is further explained in the film's novelization prologue that the T-1000 was created through nanotechnology and is a “Nanomorph”, capable of scanning the molecular structure of anything it touches and visually imitating it.
