Sir Charles Spencer “Charlie” Chaplin (16 April 1889 – 25 December 1977), also known in Greece by the nickname “Charlot,” was an English actor, director, and composer whose fame rose during the silent film era. He excelled during the early decades of Hollywood. He is chronologically the first globally recognizable figure of cinematic art, mainly through the character “Charlot” that he portrayed in his early films.

From 1912 to 1918, he used his talent in many short silent film comedies, creating the persona of Charlot. He not only starred in them, but was also the screenwriter, director, and composer of the music for his films. His worldwide acclaim came through his feature films, such as Modern Times, The Great Dictator, City Lights, Monsieur Verdoux, and others, which ranked him among the most important creators of the seventh art.

In 1952, at the height of the Cold War and the Hollywood blacklist, he fell into disfavor because of his left-wing political views. While traveling to London, he learned of the decision of the U.S. Department of Justice to revoke his visa and therefore his right to return. After this event, he remained permanently in Europe, specifically in Vevey, Switzerland, where he died on 25 December 1977. During that period, he traveled to America only once, in 1972, in order to receive the special Honorary Oscar for his contribution to cinema, earning the longest standing ovation in the history of the awards. In 1995, in a global survey of film critics, Chaplin was voted the greatest actor in film history. The American Film Institute has ranked him tenth on its list of the 25 greatest stars of all time.
