The Trooper is a song by the English Heavy Metal band Iron Maiden. It was released as the second single from the album Piece of Mind in 1983. The song was written entirely by Steve Harris. It was one of their few songs that received a lot of radio play in the USA. EAlso, on the US Mainstream Rock charts, it reached the 28th position. It was, however, also successful on the British charts, reaching the 12th position. A live performance of it, was released in 2005.
The song, like many songs of the band, is based on a historical event, specifically the Crimean War, the Battle of Balaclava, where it is narrated through the eyes of a soldier. In part, it also has influences from the poem The Charge of the Light Brigade, by Alfred Tennyson.
It is one of Iron Maiden's most well-known songs, which is not missing from the various tribute albums to the band. In a poll held in the Greek edition of Metal Hammer, the song was included among the 200 Greatest Songs of all time, taking 14th place.
