Dark Ages: The Holy Roman Empire has the same core mechanics as Dark Ages: Heritage of Charlemagne, but focuses on Central Europe. As a result, it has a different game board. Additionally, the card mixes are different, with different unique culture cards for the rulers, the technologies, and the units. Additionally, Heritage of Charlemagne contains a set of vassals, which is missing from the Holy Roman Empire . Instead’ of that, this edition features a set of relics.
The two sets also differ in the micro-expansions (“modules”) included. The Holy Roman Empire contains the modules “Crusades” and “The Pope”.
