In Lacrimosa, players take on the roles of the patrons of the late musician. Thus they contribute with their funding to the composer's works one last time. During the game, you play across two different timelines: the present and the past. In the present, you commission other composers to write the missing sections of the Requiem in order to complete it. As the events of the past unfold, the game takes place across five seasons. In these, you contribute by buying new compositions from the composer to sell or exhibit. You thus accompany him on his various journeys to the main courts and theaters of Europe. You also gather the resources you need to support the musician throughout his career.
During Lacrimosa, you play cards from a limited hand, which you will improve as the game progresses. These cards can be played either as actions or as resources. Players must optimize their resources and finances. This is, of course, to support the best version of the story and their relationship with Mozart.
