Fields of Fire III: The Parachute Regiment – Solo Wargame
Fields of Fire Volume III: The Parachute Regiment from GMT Games puts you in the position of the commander of a company of British paratroopers. This standalone solo tabletop war game follows the 2nd Battalion of the Parachute Regiment, known as 2 PARA, over more than sixty years of history. From the streets of Arnhem to the Falklands and Afghanistan, each mission requires adaptation to the conditions of the field.
Designed by Colin Parsons, based on Ben Hull's Fields of Fire system, the game focuses on command and control of infantry. Communications, relaying orders, and coordinating units play a central role. When radios fail, British bugles can become part of your effort to keep the company organized.
The system operates with cards and no dice. The action deck determines battles, orders, and attempts at actions, while terrain cards form the map. Units represent infantry sections, commands, weapon teams, and individual vehicles. You can play standalone missions or link them into a campaign, managing your company's experience and replenishments.
Three campaigns present challenges. In Arnhem 1944, you advance towards the bridge and organize the defense in an urban environment. In the Falklands 1982, you face fortified positions and night attacks. In Helmand Province, Afghanistan, in 2008, patrols and escort missions require reconnaissance of enemy forces among civilians.
Fields of Fire III adds urban defense missions, buildings that burn or collapse, mine clearance, and British equipment, such as the anti-tank PIAT. Different eras alter the available capabilities and constraints of command.
If you are looking for a challenging solitaire wargame with historical campaigns, company management, and tactical decision-making, add Fields of Fire Volume III: The Parachute Regiment. A strategic tabletop game for one player, where every order requires thought and coordination.
