The Barracks Emperor
Barracks Emperors is a strategic card game set against the backdrop of the Roman Crisis of the Third Century, during which at least 45 different men claimed the throne of the Roman Empire. In this game, 1-4 players represent prominent political factions trying to gain control of the men who would become emperors of Rome. Players use the influence at their disposal (represented by the cards in their hands) to claim imperial offices (represented by the historical emperor cards placed on the board). But they must be very careful, because politics is a complex game and sometimes the effort to exert your influence requires you to help someone else with their own conspiracies. Play your cards smartly to capture emperors and gather the most points to win.
At its heart, The Barracks Emperors is a trick-taking game, but not one you have seen before. In this innovative design, all 13 tricks are available to play simultaneously, in a grid that forces you to balance the value of each card you play with the value that the same card may have for another player in a different trick. Additionally, each card provides you with an extra special ability that you can use to surprise your unsuspecting opponents.
Features:
Historical emperors, co-emperors, claimants, even Gallic emperors who broke away from Rome during the Crisis of the Third Century, are all represented as individual cards in the game, each with interesting details about the rise and fall of the depicted figure.
For fans of Time of Crisis and The Age of Iron and Rust, you'll find some of the concepts and the flavor of that deck-warfare game adapted to this brand-new standalone game. You don't need Time of Crisis to play The Barracks Emperors, but you'll recognize Influence Cards such as the Praetorian Guard, Foederati and Pretender, which are now used in a completely new way.
An innovative card-drafting mechanism adds an extra layer of strategy to how you play your cards, while at the same time mitigating the luck that would come from being dealt a full hand of cards at the start of each round.
This game is designed for 4 players, but also includes options for 2 or 3 players, as well as an easy-to-play solitaire adaptation for the solo player.
