Leonardo da Vinci (14/15 April 1452 – 2 May 1519), or da Vinci, or Leonardo, was an Italian polymath of the High Renaissance who is widely regarded as one of the greatest painters of all time despite the limited number of his surviving works. The «Mona Lisa» is Leonardo's most famous painting and the most famous portrait in history, while his «The Last Supper» is the most reproduced religious painting; his drawing known as «The Vitruvian Man» is a famous cultural symbol.
Da Vinci is also known for his notebooks, in which he recorded scientific drawings and notes; these include a wide range of subjects, including anatomy, cartography, painting, and paleontology. Leonardo's contribution to the development of the arts is matched only by that of his contemporary Michelangelo.
