And while only a few years before the other European states gave their consent regarding the succession of Maria Theresa, ratifying the Pragmatic Sanction, the enemies suddenly see Austria as an easy prey. Bavaria and Saxony claim large swathes of Habsburg territory . With the support of France, Bavaria even aims for the imperial title. And what could be easier to take ; Austria is isolated and guided by a young inexperienced woman and possibly weak.
In December 1740 the War of the Austrian Succession finally begins. Seizing the opportunity, Frederick II of Prussia – himself king for six months – invades the Austrian province of Silesia, driven by his thirst for power and personal glory. The sudden Prussian attack is enough to take Silesia almost without a fight. In the spring of 1741, Bavaria, Saxony and France take up arms in turn. Crushed by this wave of attacks, Austria seems doomed.
Nevertheless, the attackers underestimated Maria Theresa , the strength of her character and her formidable persistence. Against the advice of her ministers, she does not intend to surrender the smallest piece of her inheritance…
