Pop! Albums : AC/DC – Highway to Hell

The “Highway to Hell” was AC/DC's first album whose production was not done by Harry Vanda and George Young. The band began composing songs and recording demos in January 1979 at the “Albert Studios” in Sydney, where they met producer Eddie Kramer. Kramer was dismissed shortly afterwards, with Robert John “Mutt” Lange taking his place, remaining, besides “Highway to Hell”, for the band's next two albums. The album's recordings took place at the “Criteria Studios” in Miami in February 1979 and at the “Roundhouse Studios” in London the following two months.

From May 1 until August 5, 1979, the band toured the United States and Canada, giving 55 concerts. This was followed by a short European tour, after which they continued for another two months in the United States. The year closed with the band touring the United Kingdom, Germany and France.

The album was released worldwide in late July and one week later in the United States, being the band's first album which managed to enter the Billboard Top-100, reaching # 17. In the United Kingdom it reached # 8, while it entered the Top-10 in France and Germany. The album was accompanied by the successful singles “Highway to Hell” and “Touch too Much”, helping the album to become platinum within six months. To date, “Highway to Hell” has been certified seven times platinum in the United States, five times platinum in Australia and double platinum in Canada.

In Australia, the album was released with a slightly different cover, featuring flames and the fretboard of a bass under the band's photo from the international edition of the album.

This was AC/DC's last album with Bon Scott in their lineup, as the singer lost his life on 19 February 1980. His last recorded words are “Shazbot, na-nu na-nu” and are found on the track “Night Prowler”. This phrase was used in the television series “Mork and Mindy” by Robin Williams.

At Christmas 2013, the single “Highway to Hell” was re-released to celebrate the band's forty years and the proceeds from its sales were donated as charity in support of cancer prevention. The single reached # 4 on the British charts, being their only Top-10 single of their career for that country.

The Pop! figure AC/DC – Highway to Hell has a height of approximately 12 cm.
