SpongeBob (Sponge Bob) is an American animated comedy television series created by marine science educator and animator Stephen Hillenburg for Nickelodeon. It depicts the adventures of the eponymous character and his aquatic friends in the fictional underwater city Bikini Bottom. It is the fifth longest-running American animated series, whose great popularity has made it a multimedia franchise. It is Nickelodeon’s highest-rated series and the most profitable property for Paramount Consumer Products, generating over $13 billion in merchandising revenue since 2019.
Many of the series’ ideas came from The Intertidal Zone, an unpublished educational comic that Hillenburg created in 1989 to teach his students about undersea life. Hillenburg joined Nickelodeon in 1992 as an animator on Rocko’s Modern Life. After Rocko was cancelled in 1996, he began developing SpongeBob into a television series that same year — and in 1997, a seven-minute pilot was presented on Nickelodeon. Network executives wanted SpongeBob to be a child in school, but Hillenburg preferred SpongeBob to be an adult. He was ready to abandon the series, but compromised by creating Mrs. Puff and her boating school, so that SpongeBob could go to school as an adult.
SpongeBob SquarePants is a cheerful and clumsy sea sponge who lives with his pet snail, Gary, in the underwater city of Bikini Bottom. He works as a fry cook at the Krusty Krab, a job at which he is extremely skilled and thoroughly enjoys. He attends Mrs. Puff's Boating School and his greatest dream in life is to obtain a boating license. Unfortunately, he gets nervous every time he has to drive a boat and drives recklessly. SpongeBob SquarePants (Sponge Bob) is very kind-hearted and likes to hang out with his best friend, Patrick. His teacher is Mrs. Puff and his boss is Mr. Krabs.
In The SpongeBob Musical, SpongeBob identifies the exact species of his sea sponge: Aplysina fistularis, a yellow sea sponge that is usually found in open waters.
