Elsa, created by Chris Buck, is based on the eponymous character from Hans Christian Andersen's 1844 fairy tale “The Snow Queen”. In Disney's adaptation, she is depicted as the heir to the throne of the kingdom of Arendelle and as the older sister of the film's main character, Princess Anna. Elsa is a withdrawn young woman who lives in fear that she will hurt others with her powers to create and control snow and ice. After accidentally plunging the kingdom into an eternal winter on the night of her coronation, she learns during the film to master her powers and overcome her fears.
