Pop! Figure Alice in Wonderland Mad Hatter
The character of the Hatter, along with all the other fantastical creatures, first appears in Lewis Carroll “Alice's Adventures in Wonderland” (1865). In “Chapter Seven – A Mad Tea-Party”, while exploring Wonderland, Alice meets the Hatter who is drinking tea with the March Hare and the Dormouse. The Hatter explains to Alice that they always drink tea because when he tried to sing about the ill-tempered Queen of Hearts, she sentenced him to death for “murdering time”, but he escaped beheading. In retaliation, Time (referred to as “him” by the Hatter) stops himself relative to the Hatter, keeping him stuck at 6:00 p.m. (or 18:00) forever.
When Alice arrives at the tea party, the Hatter is characterized by changing places at the table at any time, making brief, personal remarks, asking unanswered riddles and reciting meaningless poetry, which eventually drives Alice away. The Hatter appears again in “Chapter Eleven – Who Stole the Tarts?”, as a witness at the trial of the Hedgehog of Hearts, where the Queen seems to recognize him as the singer she sentenced to death, while the King of Hearts also warns him not to be nervous, otherwise he will execute him “on the spot”.
