Gloomhaven: Buttons & Bugs is a solo game, with an original campaign story written by Isaac Childres, featuring a gameplay style similar to Gloomhaven. It takes place after the events of Gloomhaven and Forgotten Circles. The hermit Hail from Aesther has gained a reputation for significantly helping to save the city from repeated disasters, and she absolutely hates it. Aspiring heroes continually invade her studies at the Crooked Bone, seeking help to become famous themselves – not to mention all the demons that pass through seeking revenge. She thought briefly about moving, but since that would require effort, instead’ she simply placed a spell on her front door: Whoever attempts to open it is shrunk and therefore poses no problem.
Your character is such an aspiring hero. In a reckless attempt at fame, they try to visit Hail, and poof. Now they are the size of a mouse and have entered a completely different sphere of lawlessness and self-preservation. They must find a new way to get into the Crooked Bone to convince Hail to return them to their previous size.
Each scenario consists of a single card that pits a mercenary against a handful of enemies with simplified actions and artificial intelligence. Each mercenary has only four double-sided cards in hand, which, however, can be used twice – both the front and the back – before being discarded. Attacks are resolved using a die in combination with a modifier table, and both the table and the mercenaries' ability cards can be improved as you level up during the campaign.
