Banish the Snakes
The legend says that Saint Patrick drove the snakes out of Ireland. Indeed, there are no snakes anywhere on the island – but there weren't any even before the last Ice Age! The legend is actually an allegory about his successes in converting Ireland to Christianity.
Banish the Snakes is a cooperative game that simulates 5th-century Ireland, as the Roman Empire was collapsing in the West and Ireland was turning to the Christian faith. Players represent Saint Patrick and others (up to six people) who set out to convert the pagans on the island. You must work as a team to convert the people of Ireland before the barbarians completely overrun Britain – if you fail, the Irish will not be able to save their culture in the coming centuries!
The Banish the Snakes game board shows a map of 5th-century Ireland, with four provinces-as today-but without counties yet. The wooden tiles represent the people, the Druids, the chieftains and the kings, and of course the High King at Tara. Your job is to break the interlinked influences among these groups of people and make your new ideas acceptable. Each round a card is drawn that poses new challenges to your team. The severity of the event is determined by the previous card and so no two games can be the same. The cards present events and ideas of the era, new saints and historical figures – such as Niall of the Nine Hostages.
There is a diagram of Great Britain to track the steady decline of Roman culture in Great Britain. As various parts of Britain succumb to the barbarians, increasingly difficult challenges are added to the deck, until finally Britain is completely overrun, cutting Ireland off from the continent and ending the game.
If you succeed in your endeavour, Christianity will flourish in Ireland while paganism will inundate Western Europe. The arts, writing, literature and history will flourish on the Emerald Isle! Soon, Irish missionaries will bring these cultural traits back to Great Britain and continental Europe. As Thomas Cahill says in his book, the Irish will save civilization.
