The card game BANG! depicts a classic western shootout, with each player randomly receiving a character card to define their special abilities and a secret role card to determine their objective.
Four different roles are available, each with a unique victory condition:
Sheriff – Kill all the outlaws and the renegade
Deputy – Protect the Sheriff and kill any Outlaws
Outlaw – Kill the Sheriff
Fugitive – Become the last person remaining
A player's role remains secret, except for the Sheriff. Character cards are placed face down on the table and also track the health (hand limit) in addition to the special ability.
There are 22 different types of cards in the deck. The most common are the BANG! cards, which allow you to shoot another player, assuming the target is within «range» of your current weapon. The target player can play a “Miss!” card to avoid the shot. Other cards can provide temporary boosts during the game (for example, different weapons to improve your range) and special effects that will help you or hinder your opponents (such as beer to restore health or Barrels to hide behind during shootings ). A horse is useful for keeping distance from unruly neighbors, while the Winchester can hit a target at distance 5. The Gatling is a deadly exception where range does not matter: it can be used only once, but it targets all the other players at the table!
The information on the cards is shown using symbols regardless of language and 7 summary/reference cards are included.
