Elvis Presley (8 January 1935 – 16 August 1977), also known as Elvis, was an American singer, musician and actor. He is considered one of the most important cultural icons of the 20th century and is often referred to as the King of Rock and Roll or simply the King. His energetic performances of songs and his sexually provocative performance style, combined with a uniquely powerful mix of influences across color lines during a transformative era in race relations, led him to great success – and to initial controversy.

Presley became the teen idol of his decade; he was greeted everywhere by hordes of screaming young women, and when it was announced in early 1958 that he had been drafted into the U.S. Army, there was genuine sorrow. He literally inspired thousands of musicians—initially those more-or-less like-minded Southerners, from Jerry Lee Lewis and Carl Perkins downward, who were the first generation of rockabilly, and later people who had very different combinations of musical and cultural influences and ambitions. From John Lennon to Bruce Springsteen, from Bob Dylan to Prince, it was impossible to think of any significant rock star who did not owe an explicit debt to Presley.
