Joker is a supervillain and Batman's main enemy. He first appeared in Batman 1 (Spring 1940) as a criminal mastermind whose main characteristic was a sly sense of humor. Initially intended to make only one appearance, the Joker's immediate popularity ensured that the character would continue to appear more often, becoming a frequent enemy of the Dark Knight and Robin, the Boy Wonder. By the late 1940s, the Joker had been redefined as a harmless prankster. Falling into obscurity from the 1960s, he returned in the 1970s as a more serious threat and one of Gotham City's most notorious criminals. In recent years, the character has taken on the personality of an incarnate evil, who simply enjoys torturing Batman or tries to push him into villainy.
