90.000 B.C. – A great ice age is approaching. Another titanic struggle for world domination has unwittingly begun among the different animal species.
Dominant Species is a game that represents in an abstract way a small piece of ancient history: the heavy onslaught of an ice age and what that entails for the living creatures trying to adapt to the slowly changing land. Each player will take on the role of one of the six major animal classes – mammal, reptile, bird, amphibian, arachnid or insect. Each of these starts the game more or less in a state of natural balance relative to the others. But that will not last long: This is indeed the “survival of the fittest”.
Through clever placement, players will try to dominate as many different terrain tiles as possible in order to claim powerful card effects. Players will also want to multiply their species in order to gain victory points for that particular animal. Players will be aided in these efforts through actions like specialization, migration, and adaptation, among others.
All this ultimately leads to the end of the game – the final rise of the ice age – where the player who accumulates the most victory points will have their animal as the dominant species. But someone must become dominant quickly, because it's starting to get very cold…
