Years before, a drop of sunlight created a flower capable of healing illnesses and injuries. For hundreds of years, the flower is used by Mother Gothel to maintain her youth, until the soldiers of a nearby kingdom take the flower to heal their sick Queen. Soon after, the Queen gives birth to Princess Rapunzel. In her attempt to get the flower back, Gothel discovers that Rapunzel’s golden hair has the magical properties of the flower, but by cutting it those properties are lost. Gothel kidnaps the baby and raises her as her own in an isolated tower. Once a year, on Rapunzel’s birthday, the King and Queen release sky lanterns hoping that their daughter will see them and return.
On the eve of her eighteenth birthday, Rapunzel, who sees the lanterns every year on her birthday, asks to leave the tower to discover where they come from, but Mother Gothel refuses, claiming that the outside world is dangerous. Meanwhile, a thief named Flynn Rider steals Rapunzel’s crown from the palace. Without meaning to, while trying to escape the palace guards and his partners, the Stabbington brothers, whom he betrays, he discovers the tower. Rapunzel hits him with a frying pan, knocking him unconscious, and hides the crown, not knowing its significance. She convinces the reluctant Flynn to accompany her to see the lanterns in exchange for returning the crown, in order to prove to Gothel that she can take care of herself in the "dangerous" outside world.
Wanting to get the crown back, Flynn takes Rapunzel to the "Snuggly Duckling", a bar full of criminals, in an attempt to discourage her and make her return home. The criminals, however, are charmed by Rapunzel. The King’s guards are led by a guard horse, Maximus, to the bar searching for Flynn. Rapunzel and Flynn escape but are trapped in a flood. Resigned to his fate, Flynn reveals to Rapunzel that his real name is Eugene Fitzherbert. Rapunzel remembers that her hair glows when she sings and uses it to light the cave so they can find an exit and be saved. Eugene and Rapunzel find refuge in a forest, where Gothel, who is now working with the Stabbingtons, gives the crown to Rapunzel and tells her to use it to test Flynn’s devotion to her.
Maximus finds the pair and tries to arrest Flynn, but Rapunzel manages to make a truce with him in honor of her birthday. The three of them reach the kingdom and enjoy the festive events, culminating in the evening boat ride as the lanterns are released into the sky. Having fulfilled her dream of seeing the lanterns up close, Rapunzel gives the crown to Eugene. They realize they are in love and prepare to kiss when Eugene sees the Stabbington brothers on the shore. He then leaves her alone to go give them the crown, but they tie him to a boat and meet Rapunzel, convincing her that Eugene took the crown and left. Mother Gothel appears out of nowhere and rescues Rapunzel, something she had arranged from the start with the Stabbington brothers, while betraying and taking them captive. She leaves with Rapunzel as Eugene and the Stabbingtons are held at the palace.
Back at the tower, Rapunzel recognizes the kingdom's symbol, which she had subconsciously included in her paintings all these years. Realizing she is the lost princess, she confronts Mother Gothel. As Eugene is sentenced to death, the thugs from the "Snuggly Duckling" help him escape and Maximus takes him to the tower. Eugene climbs the tower and finds Rapunzel bound and gagged, while Gothel stabs him fatally and tries to force Rapunzel to leave with her. Rapunzel agrees to do so if Gothel first allows her to heal Eugene. Gothel accepts, but Eugene, wanting Rapunzel to be free, cuts her hair, destroying its magical properties. This causes Gothel to age rapidly; in her panic she stumbles, falls from the tower window and as she falls turns to dust.
With her heart broken, Rapunzel mourns for Eugene. However, her tear, which still contains some of the sun's magic, lands on his cheek and revives him. The two of them return to the Kingdom where Rapunzel is reunited with her parents. Flooded with happiness, the Kingdom begins the celebrations while Eugene is pardoned for the crimes he committed and ultimately marries Rapunzel.
