From the opening of the Suez Canal to the start of the Second World War in 1914, there was an astonishing development of the largest, fastest and most modern steamships. While in 1870 there were still many clipper around and the good old steamship “Scotia” sails in the North Atlantic, maritime trade is dominated at the end of this era by huge vessels such as the “Mauretania” (Cunard), the “Olympic ” or the “Imperator” (Hapag).
In TransAtlantic Players operate their own shipping companies which carry goods, mail and passengers around the world. They buy new steamships from the market, each of which has its own history and its own technical characteristics (tons, knots, etc.). The competition is fierce, especially in the North Atlantic where winning the “Blue Riband” is not only a matter of prestige but can also be a profitable investment. So for a shipping company to thrive, buying the best steamships is not enough if, on the other hand, there are not enough coal bunkers and, of course, trade slots.
The game is driven by cards. In each round, you play one card and perform the corresponding action. As new cards enter the game, you build your own deck from cards with new or improved capabilities. The objective is to manage your merchant fleet more efficiently. It is a maritime strategy game with low luck, many choices and difficult decisions.
