Comics: 39 Garfield – Garfield with Lasagna Pan
Garfield is an American comic strip created by Jim Davis. It was originally published locally as Jon in 1976 and then nationally from 1978 as Garfield, and tells the life of the eponymous character Garfield, the cat, his human owner Jon Arbuckle and the dog Odie. As of 2013, it was syndicated in approximately 2,580 newspapers and magazines and held the Guinness World Record as the most widely syndicated comic strip in the world.
Although the strip's setting is rarely referenced in print, Garfield is set in Jim Davis's hometown of Muncie, Indiana, according to the television special Happy Birthday, Garfield. Common themes in the strip include Garfield's laziness, his obsession with food, his love of coffee and lasagna, his disdain for Mondays and dieting. Garfield is also shown manipulating people to get what he wants. The strip mainly focuses on the interactions between Garfield, Jon and Odie, but other recurring characters also appear.
On August 6, 2019, prior to its merger with CBS Corporation to become ViacomCBS (now Paramount Global), New York–based Viacom announced it would acquire Paws, Inc. and most of the rights to the Garfield franchise (the comics, the merchandise and the animated productions). The deal did not include the rights to the live-action Garfield films, which still belong to The Walt Disney Company through 20th Century Studios, nor the upcoming animated film The Garfield Movie, which is set to be distributed worldwide by Sony Pictures under Columbia Pictures, except China, which is scheduled for 2024. Jim Davis continues to make the comics and a new Garfield animated series is in production for Paramount Global's subsidiary, Nickelodeon.
