Bavaria and Saxony claim large swathes of Habsburg territory . With the support of France, Bavaria even aims for the imperial title. In December 1740 the War of the Austrian Succession finally begins. Seizing the opportunity, Frederick II of Prussia \u2013 himself king for six months \u2013 invades the Austrian province of Silesia, driven by his thirst for power and personal glory. The sudden Prussian attack is enough to take Silesia almost without a fight. In the spring of 1741, Bavaria, Saxony and France take up arms in turn. Crushed by this wave of attacks, Austria seems doomed.<\/p>\n
