When he was eight years old, his family moved to Σίδνεϊ and he began attending “Ashfield Boys High School”. He left school at fifteen and began to play guitar, after initially playing the banjo. In 1970 he bought his first Gibson SG. He joined Kantuckee alongside singer and guitarist Μαρκ Σνέντον, bassist Τζον Στίβενς and drummer Τρέβορ Τζέιμς.

The following year the singer Μπον Σκοτ became a member of the band and they released their first album titled “High Voltage” in 1975. Γιανγκ ended up wearing a school uniform during their live performances, after having tried dressing as a gorilla, Spider-Man, Ζορό and a comic version of Superman called Super-Ang.
